To access Balsam Lake Mountain, two trails are the most commonly used. The first, located off of Mill Brook Road in the Town of Hardenburgh (Ulster County), is called the Dry Brook Ridge Trail and is blazed with blue NYSDEC markers. after 2.2 miles, the red-blazed Balsam Lake Mountain Trail will lead .75 miles to the summit. You will encounter the 3,500' elevation sign shortly after beginning this trail.

The other popular route is via the southern end of the Dry Brook Ridge Trail (blue markers). this begins at the end of Beaver Kill Road in the Town of Hardenburgh (Ulster County). Travel along the blue-blazed trail for 1 mile, then follow the red-blazed Balsam Lake Mountain Trail, which leads .85 miles to the summit.

The various trails and their blaze colors can be seen on the map below.
